Indonesia
Indonesia’s textile heritage unfolds through many regional traditions. Songket from places including Palembang, Minangkabau and Bali brings metallic threads into ceremonial cloth.
Indonesian Batik, inscribed by UNESCO in 2009, uses wax to resist dye and create patterned cloth. Ikat traditions across places including Sumba, Flores and Kalimantan develop patterns by dyeing yarns before weaving. Each deserves its own local context. This chapter welcomes labels, designers and artisan makers from across the archipelago.
